지친 날 문득 ‘나는 쓸모없는 사람이다. 세상이 내가 죽길 바라는 지도 모르겠다.’는 말을 중얼거린 적이 있습니다. 술에 취해 머리를 변기에 박은 채요. 신기하게도 그 문장을 입 밖으로 꺼내자 깡, 깡, 하고 어디선가 쇠를 때리는 소리가 들렸습니다. 윗집의 소음이었는지 상상 속 잡음이었는지는 모르겠습니다. 다만 저는 제가 어느 모루 위의 쇳덩이가 되었다고 생각했습니다. 담금질을 하고 있다. 더 강하고 유연하게 살라고 누군가 나를 두드리고 있다. 그러자 형체 없는 절망은 사라지고 그저 여러 번 내리친 무쇠의 마음만이 제게 남았습니다. <철의 삶>은 단단하고 아름답게 살아가기 위해 무얼 해야 하는지 자문하는 앨범입니다. 내면에 머물던 시선을 창밖으로 이끌어준 이 곡들이 저는 참 마음에 들어요.
