The world’s lowest birth rate, a rapid rise in single-person households, social isolation and disconnection.
The sentence that labeled Korea as “the loneliest country” seemed somewhat exaggerated, yet it lingered in the mind. For those born and raised in that country,
the phrase is more than a surprising statistic.
It was already known, familiar,
perhaps even part of an everyday landscape that had become inseparable from identity.
 Someone merely fixed it into a single sentence. This record begins with that sentence.
Not individual loneliness,
but the inflated sense of com-munity that surrounds us like air,
and the paradoxical sentiment of collective alienation within it—
an attempt to translate these into the structure of sound. The EP The Loneliest Country is a record of hearts that never fully overlap
within what we call community. Revisiting the traditional folk song TaePyeongGa in a contemporary texture,
and condensing a piece originally composed for a scene in a film,
the record traces the threads of solitude and ease,
of relationship and illusion. Perhaps “the loneliest country” is not a geographical place,
but the invisible distance that lies be-tween us. Byul.org <TaePyeongGa> The Gyeonggi folk song TaePyeongGa is a melody that has long lingered by our side. We’ve often let various versions of it drift through our DJ sets at parties, and each time, the song arrived with a fresh sense of delight. At a glance, the lyrics seem like a simple invitation to "live and play." However, beneath the sur-face, humor and sorrow, sensuality and resignation, longing and contemplation intersect. The word TaePyeong (Peace/Tranquility) does not merely signify 'peace'; it is closer to an attitude of momentarily stepping aside from the weight and pace of life. If this frantic, persistent life is but a fleeting spring dream, it is the brief moment of leisure allowed only after acknowledging that transience. It is not resignation, but rather a self-deprecating murmur—a resolve to keep smiling while fully aware of that weight. We wanted to run our own hands over those plaintive yet sly melodies. The first public performance of this piece took place at a small gig-party held in artist Geumhyung Jeong’s studio, embedded in an industrial apartment factory in Bucheon. Perhaps because it was music we had held so deep in our hearts for so long, the air, the light, the gazes, and the laughter of that evening remain vivid even now. While numerous Gukak masters, as well as artists from the worlds of trot and jazz, have interpret-ed this song in their own languages, our work owes a particular debt to the versions by the Oasis Music Ensemble (1970), Young-im Kim (1984), Serena Kim (1987), and Prelude (feat. Young-rang Chon, 2014). We offer them our deepest respect and gratitude. It is a mundane landscape—already known, habitual, and perhaps an inextricable part of a shared identity. Someone simply fixed it into a single sentence. Regardless, the piece begins with that sen-tence, that title. It is an attempt to translate into a sonic structure not individual loneliness, but the inflated sense of community that surrounds us like air, and the paradoxical sentiment of collective alienation. Rather than leaning on the grammar of a specific genre, this track aims to be a space where unan-chored melodies and non-overlapping sounds intersect and scatter, forming various densities. Lonelinesses are treated not as raw material for emotional expression, but as a unit for building musical structure, arrangement, and distance. Through a borrowed lens and a stolen title, the work gazes upon the present. The film traces the moments of characters who, despite their physical proximity, remain ultimately unreachable. Rather than explaining these emotions, the track evokes the subtle knots—the linger-ing residues—that remain between relationships through sound. The title "The Imagined Communion" functions less as a definitive statement and more as a reflec-tion of a sensation encountered within the routine. Inside the structures called "community"—things so many long to believe in and rely upon—lies an indifference and coldness that remains unerasable, even through repeated indoctrination or self-suggestion. Perhaps those moments of sorrow, birthed from such indifference, reveal the true countenance of a community.
